WHO: Mercer University students, faculty and staff will be joined by Macon Mayor Jack Ellis and Bibb County Commission Chair Tommy C. Olmstead
WHAT: as they kick off the Mercer University School of Medicine Chapter of the Georgia Rural Health Association.
Mayor Ellis will present a proclamation on behalf of the City of Macon; Olmstead will present a resolution on behalf of the Bibb County Board of Commissioners.
Dr. Jean Rawlings Sumner, a member of the Medical School’s charter class and 1986 graduate, will speak to the students about rural health care in Georgia and her work as a physician in Washington and Johnson Counties.
Mercer students representing the School of Medicine’s three degree programs will sign the charter, becoming its first charter members.

WHERE: Mercer University School of Medicine Auditorium, 1550 College Street, Macon
WHY: Mercer’s chapter will be the first student chapter of a state rural health association in the nation. As members of the student chapter of the Georgia Rural Health Association, Mercer students will gain insight into the problems and challenges facing rural health in Georgia and in the nation. Chapter activities linked with GRHA will also allow students opportunities to network with rural health advocates and participate in activities that will foster their concern and commitment to rural health care in Georgia.
Mercer’s student chapter will be open to all Mercer students pursuing health-related degrees in the School of Medicine, Southern School of Pharmacy, Georgia Baptist College of Nursing of Mercer University and Stetson School of Business and Economics.
Mercer University School of Medicine is committed to health care in Georgia. The school first opened its doors to students in 1982 and currently has approx. 350 medical graduates in practice. In addition to the doctor of medicine degree, the School offers graduate degrees in public health, family therapy and family services.
