Atlanta — The Georgia Baptist College of Nursing of Mercer University (GBCN) Alumni Association has established a scholarship honoring Dr. Susan Sweat Gunby, an Alma native who currently serves as dean of the College. The Susan Sweat Gunby Scholarship Award for Leadership Studies in Graduate Nursing is the first scholarship to be endowed for students in the College’s new master of science in nursing degree program.
“Alumni are very grateful for the long support of Dean Gunby, and we are very happy to honor her with this gift,” said Dare Domico, a 1968 graduate who serves her alma mater as an associate professor. “The beginning of the graduate program has been a dream of Dr. Gunby for several years, and we share in the excitement that it will soon be a reality.”
“It is a wonderful surprise to have this scholarship named in my honor,” said Gunby. “I am so pleased that the Alumni Association chose to endow a scholarship that will enhance the learning opportunities of students in the graduate program.”
Classes for the master of science in nursing degree begin this fall. GBCN tailored the graduate program to meet two critical needs in health care today: nursing education and acute/critical care nursing of the adult. In addition to the master’s degree, GBCN offers a bachelor of science in nursing and an RN-BSN advanced track.
GBCN is located on Mercer University’s Cecil B. Day Graduate and Professional Campus in northeast Atlanta. Faculty and students moved into a new 60,000-square-foot facility in January and are celebrating the College’s 100th anniversary throughout the year.
