Pulitzer Prize Winner to Give NEH Lecture on Civil Rights Movement

WHO:             Diane McWhorter, author of “Carry Me Home: Birmingham, Alabama – The Climactic Battle of the Civil Rights Revolution.”
 
WHAT:            McWhorter will give the National Endowment for the Humanities lecture titled “Images of America, Civil Rights and Wrongs: Birmingham, Alabama 1963.” The event is free and open to the public.
 
WHEN:            7 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 9
 
WHERE:            Willingham Hall, Mercer’s Macon campus, 1400 Coleman Ave.
 
WHY:              McWhorter won six awards for nonfiction writing including the 2002 Pulitzer Prize, for book on Birmingham and the Civil Rights movement. McWhorter’s lecture will be preceded by a viewing of the Spike Lee documentary “4 Little Girls” at 7 p.m., Oct. 8, in Willingham Hall. McWhorter is a journalist who contributes regularly to The New York Times and the op-ed page of USA Today. She has written on race, politics, and myriad topics for a variety of publications, including Harper’s, The New Republic, The Nation, The Wall Street Journal, Newsday, The Washington Post, and People. Carry Me Home, her 600 page masterpiece, took 19 years to write and is her first book.
