MACON—Augusta resident Caroline Gary recently was awarded the Griffin B. Bell Award for Community Service at Mercer University Law School commencement May 10.
The 2003 Walter F. George School of Law graduate was selected for this honor from more than 1,500 graduates of Mercer’s 10 colleges and schools. The Judge Griffin B. Bell Award for Community Service was established in 2000 in honor of distinguished Mercer alumnus and former U.S. Attorney General Judge Griffin B. Bell, LLB ’48.
Gary is known for her personal commitment to serving others. She served as president and executive officer of the Association of Women Law Students. This organization raised more than $30,000 in the past three years through their annual auction, which supports the Macon Rescue Mission’s Battered Women and children’s Shelter, and “In our Best Interest,” a rural outreach program for battered women.
Under Gary’s leadership, AWLS participated as a Mercer Law Team in the Susan Komen Race for the Cure and held a toy drive for Kids Yule Love. She also participated in the American Bar Association Work-a-Day with Macon’s Ronald McDonald House.
The Augusta resident was also the recipient of the Dean’s Distinguished Service Award, a certificate from the dean to those students who demonstrate outstanding public service to the Law School and community.
Gary has participated in the Governor’s Intern Program with the Office of the District Attorney in the Augusta Judicial Circuit. She was recently designated as a finalist for the Presidential Management Internship, a two-year program with a master’s or higher degree in the public service sector of the federal government. After taking the bar, Gary will begin a position with the IRS as a policy analyst.
