WHO: Mercer Center for Community Development, University students, Burke Elementary sixth graders, area residents and community organizations
WHAT: After weeks of hard work by Mercer students, Burke Elementary sixth graders and community members, the community garden outside Burke Elementary school is complete. It will be formally dedicated to Dr. Vivian B. Hatcher, principal of Burke Elementary School and an educator for more than 45 years.
WHEN: Thursday, Oct. 30, 10 a.m.
WHERE: Outside of Burke Elementary School at the corner of Second Street and Williams Street.
BACKGROUND: The Bibb County Extension Agency, Burke Elementary School, Mercer students, Mercer Center for Community Development, Willing Workers Association of Central South and CORE Neighborhood Revitalization partnered to create the Garden of Success. The purpose of this community garden is to build social capital in the community while simultaneously developing a sense of community pride. The garden composed of vegetables, herbs and flowers will also provide educational opportunities for Burke Elementary students. Area residents will take turns maintaining the garden. The project was funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Office of University Partnerships.
