MACON, Ga. – Mercer will play its first home basketball game at the new University Center on Jan. 27 against in-state rival Georgia State, as announced by athletics director Bobby Pope on Thursday.

The 3,200-seat arena will play host to three men’s game in its first week, including two televised games during Homecoming on Jan. 30 and Feb.

1.  A formal opening of the entire building will be scheduled for a future date.

“We are very excited about getting to play in the new building,” Pope said.  “Now that we finally have a definite date four first game, I can’t wait for Jan. 27 to get here.”

The Bears are leaving Porter Gym on a high note, entering Saturday’s contest on a 12-game winning streak and a 15-1 record at home since the beginning of last season.

“I hate to leave Porter because of the magic and history in these walls,” said Mercer head coach Mark Slonaker.  “But I’m really excited about getting to play in our new facility and giving our fans a great venue to watch us play.”
