MACON – Leading edge information on breast cancer detection and treatment will be presented at an Oct. 21 “Pink Ribbon Rally” hosted by Mercer University. The rally, organized by students in the Master of Public Health program, will feature an educational program, a fashion show, free massages, door prizes and yoga classes. The event will last from 5 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Newton Chapel, on the corner of Coleman Avenue and Adams Street, and is free and open to the public.
“Over 200,000 new invasive cases of breast cancer occur among American women each year, and it is ranked second among cancer deaths in women,” says Frances Carter, assistant director of Mercer’s Master of Public Health Program and project coordinator of the Central Georgia Cancer Coalition. “However, numerous studies have shown that early detection saves lives and increases treatment options. We hope the Pink Ribbon Rally will increase breast cancer awareness in the middle Georgia community.”
As part of the rally’s educational portion, presentations will be made about general and vascular surgery, digital mammography, PET scans, clinical trials and chemotherapy and the brain. The rally will also feature information about the Susan G. Komen “Race for the Cure,” a “Think Pink” fashion show hosted by Dillards Macon Mall, free massages by the Academy of Healing Arts and yoga classes by Dr. Elizabeth Patrenos.
In addition to the Mercer Public Health Association, the event is being sponsored by the American Cancer Society, the Central Georgia Cancer Coalition, Coliseum Medical Centers, the Medical Center of Central Georgia, the North Central Health District and the Susan G.
