Dr. James Cobb to Speak at Lamar Lecture Series

WHO:             Southern History Scholar James C. Cobb, Ph.D., Spalding Distinguished Professor of History at the University of Georgia

WHAT:           Cobb will give three lectures on the topic: “Before and After Brown: Jim Crow, the Brown Decision, and the Changing Face of Southern Identity.” The lectures are free and open to the public. 

WHEN:           Monday, Oct. 18, at 10 a.m. “Brown, Blacks and the South: The Discovery of Southern Black Identity”

                        Monday, Oct. 18, at 7:30 p.m. “Even Stranger Than We Thought: Shifting Perspectives on the Career of John Crow”

                        Tuesday, Oct. 19, at 7:30 p.m. “Down on Brown: The Critics Challenge What Was and Imagine What Might Have Been”

WHERE:        All lectures will take place in Neva Langley Fickling Hall, McCorkle Music Building, Mercer University’s Macon Campus (1400 Coleman Avenue)

BACKGROUND:      The annual Lamar Memorial Lecture series on Southern history and culture was established at Mercer in 1957.

Cobb has written and lectured widely on the interaction of economy, society, and culture in the American South. His books include The Selling of the South: The Southern Crusade for Industrial Development, 1936-1990 (1993); The Most Southern Place on Earth: The Mississippi Delta and the Roots of Regional Identity (1992); and Redefining Southern Culture: Mind and Identity in the Modern South (1999).
