(MACON) Part of the closing activities of the International Conductors Workshop (ICW) and Festival, being held Jan. 12-16 at Mercer University in Macon, will be a free concert at 2 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, in the Neva Langley Fickling Hall of Mercer’s McCorkle Music Building. Some of the participants of the five-day workshop will conduct the Macon Sinfonia in a program featuring the works of Beethoven. The public is invited to attend.
“We have outstanding talent who will conduct,” said Adrian Gnam, director of the workshop and festival. The participating conductors will have worked with members of the Macon Sinfonia throughout their workshop sessions.
This is the second year that Mercer University, the Macon Symphony and the St. Petersburg (Russia) Philharmonic Society have collaborated for this important training event for conductors from all over the world. Countries represented are Japan, South Korea, Nicaragua, Armenia, Israel, Brazil and the United States.
This year’s participants will work with the Mercer/Macon Symphony Youth Orchestra, the Mercer University Wind Ensemble and the Macon Sinfonia. Winners of the workshop will guest conduct during next season’s Macon Symphony Orchestra concerts.
Faculty for the workshop include Maestro Gnam, music director and conductor of the Macon Symphony Orchestra and Distinguished Artist-in-Residence at Mercer University; Leonid Korchmar, chief conductor of the Kirov Opera and Ballet; Oleg Proskurnya, conductor of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Society; Dr. Douglas Hill, director of the Mercer University Wind Ensemble; and Dr. Gregory Pritchard, conductor of the North Georgia Symphony, winner of last year’s ICW competition and winner of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Society workshop held last summer.
