Mercer Striving to Reach Tsunami Fundraising Goal

Macon and Atlanta—In January, Mercer University established a Tsunami Relief Committee to raise $15,000 from the university community to support the recovery efforts in South Asia hit by the Dec. 26, 2004, disaster.

Mercer faculty, staff and students have been participating in a variety of activities. The next big fundraiser is Bandfest, a benefit concert featuring contemporary Christian artists “By the Tree” at 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 19, in Willingham Auditorium on the Macon campus. Tickets are $5 for Mercer and Wesleyan students, faculty and staff and their families; $8 for a groups of 15 or more from outside of the University; and $10 for general admission. Tickets are available at the door or by calling (478) 301-2868.

 Other activities held by the Mercer community have included:

Collection points on the Macon and Atlanta campuses and at the Regional Academic Centers;
Candlelight vigil service  on the Macon campus on Feb. 9;
Pie-a-Professor event on the Macon campus on Feb. 11;
Donation buckets passed at halftime at home basketball games.

The deadline for contributions for this project is Thursday, March 31.
 
Contributions can be made by sending checks to the Bursar’s Office on the Atlanta Campus or the university cashier in Mercer One on the Macon Campus. Make checks payable to Tsunami Relief Fund of the Mercer Community Funds will be distributed through Save the Children and Habitat for Humanity. Both these agencies have established a presence in the affected areas and will be involved in medium- to long-term reconstruction efforts.
