MACON—Mercer University senior Nancy David of Fayetteville was recently selected from college students across the state to receive the Jack Mangham Experiential Learning Award from the Georgia Association of Colleges and Employers.
The award is given to college students in Georgia who exemplify the characteristics of an outstanding student in experiential learning. One winner is selected from across the state in three categories- business, arts and sciences, and engineering/technology. David won the award in the business category in recognition of her outstanding performance as a summer intern with Pfizer Pharmaceuticals last year.
After completing training in New York City, David worked at Pfizer’s Atlanta office. For two weeks she shadowed one of Pfizer’s Pharmaceutical representatives. She was then allowed to venture out by herself into the world of sales for three weeks. David was in charge of presenting three drugs and their benefits to doctors.
“Through my internship, I learned that I enjoyed sales, and I think this experience has opened the door for future opportunities after I graduate,” David said. “It was a great source for networking, and it gave me an idea of what a professional career is like.”
Mary Roberts, who serves as assistant director of Mercer University Career Services, nominated David for the Jack Mangham Experiential Learning Award.
“I nominated Nancy because she truly represents the spirit of the award,” Roberts said. “In addition to excelling in the classroom and as a campus leader, Nancy went above and beyond in her internship with Pfizer Pharmaceuticals. After this summer, we will have had 142 students to go through the MAPS Internship Program. When I think of students who have best represented Mercer University and the Stetson School of Business and Economics, Nancy will always be one that comes to mind.”
The managing director of the InRoads Program, which coordinated the internship opportunity at Pfizer, said in his recommendation letter, “If anyone deserves this award it would be Nancy. I annually have responsibility for over 250 interns with 70 corporate clients, I can honestly say that Nancy is one of the brightest, most dedicated ones that I have come across.”
Nominees are evaluated based on the internship supervisor’s recommendation, academic performance and citizenship. David is the daughter of Michael and Nora David of Fayetteville.
