Baseball Bears Face #1 Team in Country Today

 MACON, Ga. – Mercer baseball, coming off a second consecutive series win, hits the road for the first time in 2006, heading to Gainesville, Fla., today to take on the nation’s #1 ranked team, the Florida Gators.

“This is a great opportunity for our guys to play against elite competition,” head coach Craig Gibson said. “When we are recruiting players, we tell them they will get to play against the best teams in the country; this is their chance.”

Mercer (4-2) defeated VMI twice over the weekend for its second consecutive series win. John Dortch continued to perform for the Bears. He is hitting .500 on the year, with a double, a homer, four RBIs, a team leading eight runs scored and a team high four stolen bases.

Florida (3-0) opened the season with a sweep of Cincinnati, racking up 40 runs in the three game series. Adam Davis led the Gators with seven hits in 13 at-bats, with a double, a homer and seven RBIs.

Blake Quarles gets his first career start for the Bears. Opposing him on the mound will be sophomore Michael Branham, making his first appearance of the season.

First pitch in Gainesville is scheduled for this evening at 6:30 p.m.
