WHO: The Mathematics Department of Mercer University’s College of Liberal Arts will host an event for approximately 40 high school girls from several Central Georgia schools, including Northeast High School in Macon.
WHAT: Sonya Kovalevsky Days are held at colleges and universities around the country, often with support from the Association for Women in Mathematics, to give high school girls an opportunity to learn about interesting mathematics topics directly from women mathematicians. Sonia Kovalevsky was a 19th-Century mathematician who was regarded as one of world’s best mathematicians in her time. Local high school girls and their teachers are invited to Mercer’s campus to participate in workshops and learn about careers that involve mathematics.
WHERE: Knight Hall Rooms 100, 104 and 108 at Mercer University’s Macon Campus.
WHEN: Saturday, Feb. 25, 2006, from 9:30 a.m. to 10:55 a.m.
WHY: The purpose of Sonia Kovalevsky Days is to encourage young women to continue their study of mathematics, assist them with the sometimes difficult transition between high school and college mathematics, assist the teachers of women mathematics students, and encourage colleges and universities to develop more extensive cooperation with high schools in their area.
