MCDONOUGH — Mercer University’s Henry County Regional Academic Center will hold an information session this week for its second summer session as well as the two fall sessions. Adults interested in earning a bachelor’s degree through the Center’s evening and weekend programs are invited to the free information session at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, June 27. Academic advisors, professors and admissions counselors will be available to answer questions and discuss programs.
Located near the Henry County Government Complex, just off Interstate 75, Mercer’s Henry County Center is designed specifically with an evening and weekend format for adult learners who want to begin or complete a bachelor’s degree at one of the nation’s top universities. Classes are held one evening per week or on Saturday in eight-week sessions. Financial aid is available for students who attend half time or more.
The session will be geared toward prospective students who are interested in admission beginning with a summer session or the first fall term. The deadline for the second summer session is July 1: the session begins Friday, July 14. The first fall session begins in August.
Two of the University’s 10 schools and colleges have undergraduate degree programs at the Henry County location and accept students for the second session. Tift College of Education provides initial certification in early childhood/special education and middle grades, as well as a bachelor of science in education degree in those specialties. The College of Continuing and Professional Studies has undergraduate programs in criminal justice, human services, information systems and liberal studies, along with a degree-completion program in organization leadership.
Beginning this fall, the Tift College of Education will also offer a Bachelor of Science in Education in early care and education. This new program, which focuses on education for children between birth and kindergarten, will provide initial certification for current and prospective childcare teachers and administrators.
Demand for qualified early care and education professionals continues to rise and the Tift College of Education has taken the lead role in the development of the standards and curriculum for early care and learning in the state of Georgia. Mercer will be the first university in the state to offer a bachelor’s degree leading to certification in birth to 5-year-old education. Graduates of the Early Care and Education program will be qualified for administrative or teaching positions with childcare centers, Head Start programs, pre-kindergarten programs, social services agencies, and other facilities designed for the care and development of young children.
Two graduate programs are offered at Mercer’s Henry County Center: the Master of Education in Educational Leadership and the Professional Master of Business Administration. Information on both programs will be available at the information session. The next class for the graduate education program starts in August and for the graduate business program begins in January 2007.
