Student to Serve as Liaison for National Organization

MACON –Stephanie Mathews, a second-year student in Mercer University’s Master of Public Health program, has been elected to serve as the campus liaison to the Student Assembly of the American Public Health Association (APHA). In this role, she will work to advance the mission of APHA to enhance students’ educational experience and professional development.

“I am honored to be involved with the APHA Student Assembly as a campus liaison,” Mathews said. “I am excited to serve the organization in its mission to enhance students’ professional development, and I’m equally excited about my educational experience at Mercer and the opportunities it provides for its students.”

Mathews, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lonnie D. Mathews of Reynolds, Ga., has excelled academically while at Mercer. She was selected as a National Scholar for the Maternal and Child Health Bureau of the Graduate Student Internship Program in April 2006. She is currently conducting research as a maternal and child health epidemiologist/program analyst at Duval County Health Department in Jacksonville, Fla. Upon completing her research, Mathews will return to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, where she was selected as an Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education Fellow in May 2006 as a continuing education coordinator.
