MACON — Georgia State Rep. Brooks Coleman Jr., R-Duluth, the Chairman of the House Education Committee and 1962 graduate of Mercer University, will be the featured speaker of Founders’ Day at Mercer University on Wednesday, Feb. 14. The program will begin at 10 a.m. in the Willingham Auditorium on Mercer’s Macon Campus. The event is free and open to the public.
Coleman, a nationally noted motivational speaker when not serving at the State Capitol, was first elected to office in 1993. Currently serving the constituents of District 97, he is also a member of the Retirement, Natural Resources and Intra-Governmental Affairs Committees, in addition to his leadership role on the Education Committee.
Rep. Coleman earned his B.A. in elementary education, focusing on science, at Mercer. While at Mercer, he served as Senior Class President and was a member of the Blue Key Honor Society. He went on to earn a master’s in education/supervision from the University of Georgia. In 1970, he earned an Ed.S. in elementary education, focusing on reading from the University of Georgia and in 1975 earned another Ed.S. from Georgia State University in administration/supervision. In 1978, he earned his Ph.D. in administration/curriculum from Georgia State University.
Rep. Coleman has had the opportunity to hold several high-ranking positions in the Gwinnett County School System. He has served as assistant superintendent, director of curriculum development and as an administrative assistant to the superintendent. Brooks has been a principal of three different schools and been a teacher at two. He has been an active member and teacher at the Duluth First Baptist Church since 1962. Coleman is also an accomplished writer, having written three educational publications.
