ATLANTA — Mercer University will offer a workshop on psychopharmacology from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, April 27, at its Cecil B. Day Graduate and Professional Campus, 3001 Mercer University Drive. The event will be held in Wooten Auditorium in Swilley Library.
The workshop is open to licensed professional counselors. Registration is $70 for counselors before April 20 and $80 thereafter. The registration fee for students is $25. The program provides up to five-and-a-half National Board of Career Counselors continuing education units and six CEs from the Licensed Professional Counseling Association for licensed professional counselors.
This workshop will be facilitated by Dr. Jamie Rasche. Dr. Rasche practiced pediatrics for over 30 years in Virginia and Tennessee — where she was an assistant clinical professor of pediatrics at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital — and Georgia until her retirement in 2004. Dr. Rasche received her B.S. from Fordham University and M.D from the University of Connecticut. She did her residency in pediatrics at William Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak, Mich. Dr. Rasche is currently working toward a Master of Science in Community Counseling at Mercer.
The goal of this course is to familiarize participants with medications that impact physical, emotional and behavioral aspects of client well being, and to explore the positive and negative potentials of these drugs. The mechanism of action of neurotransmitters will be presented and an overview of brain anatomy and function will assist attendees in understanding how medications work. The presentation will include the classification of medications used in psychotherapy according to their mode of action, side effects and potential complications. Participants will be assisted in anticipating or identifying possible adverse effect in their clients who are on medication.
At the conclusion of the course, participants should be able to:
· Understand the concept of neurotransmitters.
· Identify categories of psychotherapeutic medications.
· Understand positive and negative actions of psychoactive medications.
· Identify characteristics of Attention Deficit Disorder and the impact of medication on clinical course.
· Understand trends in drug abuse, and their physical, emotional, and behavioral impact.
