‘Rashomon’ Highlights Events Spotlighting Japan At Mercer University

MACON — Mercer University Theatre will hold performances of Fay and Michael Kanin’s play “Rashomon” this week at 7 p.m. at the Backdoor Theater, located at the back of Willingham Hall on the Mercer Macon campus. The play runs March 11-15 and 17-19, and admission is $5.

Directed by Scot J. Mann, assistant professor of Communication and Theatre Arts at Mercer, the play, is set 1,000 years ago in Japan. Three men who take shelter from a terrible storm discover that the mysterious, violent death of a stranger touches them all.

College of Liberal Arts professors Leona Kanter, Ph.D., chair of the Sociology Department and Beth Stewart, Ph.D., professor of Art, developed the following “Spotlight on Japan” series to accompany “Rashomon.” Among the free activities and displays available are:

· Akira Kurosawa Film display
March 10-31 in the Media Center of the Jack Tarver Library

· Japanese Calligraphy Workshop
Thursday, March 20, at 5 p.m. in the Hardman Art Building, Room 203

· Japanese Origami Workshop
Thursday, March 27, at 5 p.m. in the Hardman Art Building, Room 203
