A group of Mercer University students in the Mercer On Mission program are working to record their trip to Costa Rica on their own blog, http://merceronmissioncostarica.blogspot.com. They will be posting throughout their journey through the Central American country, which began July 7 and will end on July 25.
The 25 Mercer students are led by Gregory Domin, Ph.D., associate professor of political science, and Robert Hargrove, Ph.D., professor of chemistry and environmental sciences.
“There is a calling for humans to work together to take care of one another. We truly care for others because the ultimate goal is to change the world for the better,” Domin said. “We’re writing this blog to chronicle our journey, as we learn from those around us and work to change the world and ourselves.”
Dr. Domin and several of his students update the blog regularly and post pictures on the group’s photo site, http://s340.photobucket.com/albums/o330/merceronmission.
The students are in the midst of a 15-day excursion through Costa Rica, where they are exploring the country’s commitment to the environment and participating in service projects. In addition to the service-learning component, student are taking Dr. Domin’s Political Science 253 course, “Introduction to International Relations,” and Dr. Hargrove’s Earth and Environmental Science 150 course, “Introduction to Environmental Science.”
Mercer On Mission is a two-year-old program that offers students life-changing experiences through a combination of study abroad and service-learning. In 2007, Mercer sent teams of students and faculty to Kenya, Guatemala and Brazil to partner with local Baptist missions agencies in service opportunities. This summer, Mercer On Mission has deployed teams to China, Liberia, Senegal, Costa Rica and South Africa.
