MACON — Mercer University’s fall enrollment increased by a healthy 5.2 percent over the fall of 2007, setting a record as the highest enrollment in Mercer’s history.
Based on official 15th class day numbers, Mercer has enrolled a total of 7,573 students, shattering the previous record fall enrollment of 7,200, set in 2001 and tied last fall. The 599 entering freshmen on the Macon campus recorded 25th/75th percentile SAT scores of 1080/1290. It is the largest freshman class since 2005.
The most significant gains in enrollment were recorded in Mercer’s Tift College of Education, which saw an increase of 314 students, or 21.9 percent over last year’s figures. Other significant increases were recorded by the College of Continuing and Professional Studies — up 81 students, or 11.8 percent over last year — and the School of Medicine, which showed an increase of 54 students, or 15 percent, including 30 first-year M.D. students in the School’s new four-year medical program on the Savannah campus.
The University has one more fall enrollment period, which typically pushes the fall numbers even higher.
“This is a very significant and healthy enrollment increase for the University,” said President William D. Underwood. “It reflects the high demand that exists for the exceptional quality of education available at Mercer.”
