MACON — Mercer University President William D. Underwood today announced the appointment of Dr. Wade Shaw, professor of engineering systems at Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Fla., and editor-in-chief of IEEE Engineering Management Review, as dean of Mercer’s School of Engineering, effective July 1.

“Dr. Shaw expresses, both in his vision for the School of Engineering and in his academic service, a strong commitment to Mercer’s mission and to the University’s 10-Year strategic plan. He is a dedicated scholar and teacher, who will, I am convinced, provide able leadership to a school whose importance extends much beyond our own University community,” said Provost Wallace L. Daniel. “Dr. Shaw is extremely skilled at building relationships with other constituencies, within and outside the university, and he has the mind of a servant-leader and the spirit of an entrepreneur.

“I want to express my appreciation to members of the School of Engineering search committee, chaired by Dr. Laura Lackey, for their excellent work and their service to the school and the university,” Dr. Daniel said. “I also am grateful to Dr. Michael Leonard, who is providing strong and effective leadership as interim dean.”

Over his nearly 20-year career at Florida Tech, Dr. Shaw has served as associate dean of engineering, director of the Center for Teaching and Learning Excellence and program chair of engineering management and technology management. A registered professional engineer, his other professional activities include service as president of the IEEE Engineering Management Society and associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing. He has been a consultant to numerous companies and military branches, including Boeing Aerospace, Rockwell International, Piper Aircraft Corp., the U.S. Army and the U.S. Air Force.

“I am honored to serve as dean of the Mercer University School of Engineering. It has been my pleasure to meet so many dedicated educators within the Mercer community and I look forward to joining the team to help carry on and strengthen the traditions that have served the university so well,” Dr. Shaw said. “The School of Engineering will continue to focus on outstanding research, teaching and service to prepare our graduates for a lifetime of professional practice. I am truly excited to join a university that holds such a high, forward-looking commitment to scholarship, student engagement and community service.”

An award-winning faculty member at Florida Tech, Dr. Shaw is a distinguished military graduate of Clemson University, where he earned a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, a master’s degree in systems engineering, and a Ph.D. in engineering management. He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps and earned the U.S. Army Commendation Medal, the Army Service Award, and the Meritorious Service Award, as well as an Army Doctoral Fellowship.

His research interests are in simulation modeling, engineering and technology management, systems engineering, systems analysis and design, and project management. He has published numerous monographs, research papers and newspaper articles on business and engineering-related topics and has been awarded research grants from various corporations, the National Science Foundation and branches of the U.S. military.

Dr. Shaw and his wife, Susan, have two sons, Ben and Cameron.
