McDONOUGH/LITHIA SPRINGS — Beginning in August, Mercer University’s College of Continuing and Professional Studies will offer a new undergraduate major, human resources administration and development, at the Henry County and Douglas County Regional Academic Centers. The program will be offered in a flexible evening and weekend format that also includes hybrid online and face-to-face courses.
The field of human resources and development is growing even in the current economic climate, the degree’s designers say, because in order to maintain maximum efficiency, retention and ongoing training for workers is essential.
“A number of current and prospective students have expressed interest in a human resources degree program, and we’ve already had a great response from applicants to this new program,” said Dr. Laurie Lankin, associate professor and coordinator of the new program. “The human resources field has become highly specialized in large organizations and now smaller establishments are moving in this direction. We’ve designed this program to provide graduates with the cutting-edge knowledge and skills needed to excel in this field, no matter what the size of their organization.”
The Bachelor of Applied Science degree is offered in a convenient evening and weekend program in eight-week sessions. The human resource and administration major will prepare graduates for career paths in corporations, government, non-profits, health care and adult educational institutions. The new major is designed in two tracks: human resources administration or training and development. To complete the degree program, students take 10 core human resources and foundation courses, including an internship or project course, as well as five courses in their chosen track.
“We are delighted to offer this new undergraduate program focused on preparing students for effective leadership in organizations and, more specifically, for leadership in the human resources profession,” said Dr. Priscilla Danheiser, dean of the College of Continuing and Professional Studies. “In developing the innovative curriculum, we consulted human resources professionals from a wide range of organizations. Through this program, we will contribute directly to the preparation of individuals for success in new and emerging workplace environments.”
