MACON — Mercer University Opera will present a Valentine Opera Gala, “The Many Splendors of Love,” on Friday, Feb.12, at 7:30 p.m. at the Cox Capitol Theatre. General admission tickets are $12 for balcony seats, $20 for floor seats and $35 for floor seats including pre-concert gala reception at 6 p.m. Student tickets are $8 with a valid ID. All proceeds will benefit Mercer Opera.
The gala will include songs, arias, and duets all about love. “The pieces will vary from happy, sad, and romantic, all focusing on the different aspects of love,” said Dr. Martha Malone, vocal chair and director of Mercer University Opera. “It’s the perfect date night for Valentine’s weekend.”
In addition to Mercer University Opera students, two alumni from Mercer’s Townsend School of Music — Mary Brooke Quarles and Laura Floyd — will perform, along with professional pianist and First Baptist Church organist Anne Armstrong.
The event will also have an educational component. The Cox Capitol Theatre received a grant from the Grassroots Arts program of the Macon Arts Alliance for local high school students to attend the gala for free. Doors for the public will open at 6:45 p.m. and the theatre’s full bar and restaurant will be open.
The Central Georgia Opera Guild will hold a champagne reception before the event starting at 6 p.m.
