ATHENS – Mercer’s student newspaper, The Cluster, recently won several awards at the Georgia College Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest, including first place awards in the categories “Best Campus Community Service – Sports” and “Improvement.” The awards were announced at the association’s Better Newspaper Conference, which was held Feb. 5-6 in Athens.
“I couldn’t be prouder of the student staff of The Cluster — the paper competed against much larger papers with much bigger budgets and still placed in nearly every category entered,” said Lee Greenway, adviser to The Cluster. “The staff members have consistently impressed me with their professionalism and enthusiasm for delivering a quality newspaper, and it’s terrific to know that those outside of the Mercer community are equally impressed. The student journalists of The Cluster have invested a huge amount of time and energy into bringing the campus the important stories, and the professionals at the association obviously recognize that hard work.”
The Cluster competed in Division A, the category for four-year colleges and universities with more than 8,000 students, and the competition included such publications as Georgia Tech’s Technique and Georgia Southern University’s George-Anne Daily. In addition to the two first place awards, The Cluster placed second in “Best Campus Community Service – Features” and “Layout and Design,” and third in “General Excellence.”
