NEW YORK — Students from Mercer’s Professional Master of Business Administration program recently returned from a five-day tour of the Big Apple, going from Broadway to Wall Street as part of the cohort’s Best Practices Field Residency.
The group of 18 students and three faculty members toured business and cultural sites around the city, meeting with a number of prominent business people. Among the group’s stops were Alston & Bird, one of America’s largest law firms, where they had the opportunity to meet with Mark McElreath, a Mercer alumnus and mergers and acquisitions specialist at the firm; a tour of the United Nations, including a discussion with Dr. Ingo Pitterle, a UN economist, and a co-author the UN 2010 World Economic Outlook; a tour of the Museum of American Finance and the New York Federal Reserve Bank, where they saw the largest repository of gold in the world, and discussed the recent financial crisis with Susan McLaughlin, a New York Fed senior vice president who worked on the financial rescue programs that helped to pull the country back from financial disaster.
The group met with Richard Rosenblatt, the president of Rosenblatt Securities, which hosts the New York Stock Exchange, and Hank Byrd, founder Hawkshaw Capital, a hedge fund that successfully weathered the financial collapse. . The group also met with U.S. Commerce Department officials and Robert Fueth, vice president of the World Trade Center Association and Quentin Brathwaite, director of construction for the Port Authority of New York, which is responsible for the rebuilding of the World Trade Center.
As part of a segment of the trip titled “the Business of Show Business,” the group got a tour of the Booth Theatre on Broadway and met with actress Jessica Phillips, who plays in the Pulitzer-winning musical, “Next to Normal.” In addition, the group spoke with a theater manager and Dave Clemmons, owner of a talent agency and producer of the Tony Award-winning show “Spring Awakening.”
