MACON – Mercer University students and faculty will volunteer with the Bibb County Afterschool Program’s annual Lights On Afterschool celebration on Thursday in Tattnall Square Park from 3:30 to 6 p.m. This year’s theme is “Fitness Extravaganza,” and children will participate in activities such as a bike rodeo and an inflatable obstacle course at the park, located directly across from the Mercer campus.

Approximately 25 Mercer student organizations will put on activities for as many as 400 children from five public elementary schools. Lights On Afterschool is held across the country every year to emphasize the importance of after school programming for children.

Dr. Chris Grant, associate professor of political science and one of the Mercer organizers, said the event is a good way for Mercer faculty and students to have fun with the children. This is the sixth year that Mercer has been a part of the event.

“It’s a great opportunity for us to connect with people who are literally on our front doorstep,” he said.
