Country icon Tanya Tucker, singer of nine No. 1 hit singles and 29 Top 10 singles, will take the stage at The Grand Opera House on Friday, March 18, at 8 p.m. in downtown Macon. With hits including “Delta Dawn,” “Two Sparrows In A Hurricane” and “What’s Your Mama’s Name,” Tucker continues to be a force on the music scene. By the age of 15, Tucker had received a Grammy nomination, released a greatest hits package, and was one of the first country artists to appear on the cover of Rolling Stone.
Starting with her first recorded hit, “Delta Dawn” at the age of 13, Tucker developed a strong stage presence, making more than 200 appearances a year. Shortly after her 16th birthday, she topped the country charts and reached the Top 40 with “Lizzie And The Rainman.” Tucker continued to make good music and tour throughout the 70s and 80s, but enjoyed a resurgence of sorts at the end of the latter decade. In 1988, she had three No. 1 country singles: “I Won’t Take Less Than Your Love,” with Paul Davis and Paul Overstreet, “If It Don’t Come Easy,” and “Strong Enough To Bend.” Other Top 5 hits include “Down To My Last Teardrop” and “(Without You) What Do I Do About Me”.
Tucker published the autobiography Nickel Dreams in 1996 and released the album “Complicated” in 1997. After parting with Capitol Records, Tucker released her 31st album, and first on her own label, Tuckertime, featuring songs “Borrowed Winds,” “Oh What a Love,” “We Had It All,” and “Waitin’ for the Sun,” which once again landed her on the country charts.
Tucker, an inductee of the Country Music Hall of Fame’s Walkway of Stars, began her successful career in the early 70s and continues forging ahead with her artistry in her fourth decade as an entertainer. Her numerous honors include a Grammy Award nomination in 1994 for Vocal Collaboration on “Romeo,” with Kathy Mattea, Dolly Parton and Mary Chapin Carpenter; the Country Music Association (CMA) Female Vocalist Of The Year Award in 1991; CMA’s Female Video Artist of the Year in 1993; the Academy of Country Music (ACM) Video of the Year Award in 1992 and in 1993. Tucker also hosted the 30th annual ACM Awards with Jeff Foxworthy and Clint Black.
