MACON – Mercer University Athletics is giving its fans and interested parties in the middle Georgia area to get an up-close-and-personal look at the options for its football helmet design this Saturday at Mercer’s BIG Bear Event at 6 p.m. in the University Center. The final four design prototypes will be on display and everyone attending will be able to register their vote that evening.

“A helmet has always been something which readily identifies a football program,” said Mercer football head coach Bobby Lamb, who will also be on hand to meet fans at the BIG Bear Event. “The helmet will be the brand for Mercer football; it’s what we will be selling to the community and fans.

“It is a huge decision. It was important to be able to include alumni, students, staff and fans in the choice of a helmet because it is Mercer’s football team.

“I hope we have a great turnout.”

In addition to viewing the helmets, the BIG Bear Event will offer a “Reverse Raffle” with a $10,000 grand prize, silent and live auctions and student-athlete awards and recognition. The event is a main fundraiser for the Bears’ athletics program.

The four final helmet designs feature a diverse selection of options. Option No. 1 features a white helmet with an orange stripe, black facemask and with the block “M” and Bears’ head logo.  Option No. 2 is a black helmet with an orange stripe and white facemask, also with the block “M” and Bears’ head logo. The Option No. 3 design is a white helmet with a black stripe and orange facemask and the word “Mercer” spelled out for the logo. Option No. 4 is an orange helmet with a white stripe and facemask, and the interlocking “MU” logo.

“I am really excited about the opportunity to bring college football back to Macon,” Lamb said.
