MACON — Mercer University’s School of Engineering has joined the four other engineering schools in Georgia to form the Georgia Consortium of Engineering Schools. The new entity will be dedicated to the promotion and enhancement of engineering education in Georgia. Founding members of the organization in addition to Mercer are: the University of Georgia, Southern Polytechnic State University, Georgia Southern University and Georgia Institute of Technology.

“This is a wise thing to do given the rising demand for engineering talent across the state and the emergence of initiatives to improve education quality and capacity,” said Dr. Wade H. Shaw, dean of the Mercer School of Engineering and Kaolin Chair of Engineering.

The consortium will hold its inaugural meeting at Southern Polytechnic on May 23. Initially, it will convene to discuss the current state of engineering at each school, along with its plans for the future. By providing opportunities for Georgia’s engineering deans to gather and discuss the crucial issues facing their schools, as well as the engineering profession, the consortium will seek to expand the depth and breadth of engineering educational and professional opportunities in the state. The consortium will help each school achieve its goals, as well as serve the residents and industries in Georgia, Dr. Shaw said.

About the School of Engineering
The Mercer School of Engineering was established in 1985 to fill a critical need in Central Georgia for highly trained engineers, particularly at the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center, which is the state’s largest industrial complex. Today, Mercer engineering graduates are changing the world, especially in the state of Georgia. Mercer engineers enter the work force equipped with solution-focused, real-world experience and a commitment to serving their communities. The School is known for its breadth of engineering coverage in the undergraduate program, its five-year joint bachelor’s/master’s degree program, its award-winning Technical Communication Department, and for producing engineers ready for the 21st Century work force. The School continues to be ranked as one of the top undergraduate-focused engineering schools in the southeast by U.S. News & World Report and for its commitment to educating women and minority engineers. It is consistently the largest provider of entry-level engineers to the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center.
