MACON — Two Mercer University chapters of Greek organizations have recently received national recognitions. The Alpha Zeta chapter of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity was recognized as a True Merit Chapter and named one of the top 10 chapters in the nation, and the Beta Sigma chapter of Alpha Delta Pi sorority received a Maxine Blake Golden Lion Award.

“These chapters exemplify the high standards our student organizations are known for, and we are proud of their achievements,” said Cindy Drury, assistant director of campus life. “These chapters are part of two very large organizations and they were competing with chapters from universities across the country. Their efforts have shown what truly separates Mercer students from others.”

The True Merit Chapter Award is given to Alpha Tau Omega chapters that demonstrate overall excellence in four major categories: focus, fundamentals, finances and friendship. This was the seventh time that Alpha Zeta has been recognized as a True Merit Chapter in 10 years. The fraternity was chosen as one of the top 10 in the country from more than 120 chapters nationwide. In addition, Alpha Zeta was recognized for excellence in the following categories: pledge education, ritual, financial management, campus involvement and leadership development, recruitment and scholarship. Current Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal was a member of the Alpha Zeta chapter when he attended Mercer.

The Beta Sigma chapter received the Maxine Blake Golden Lion Award this summer during the Alpha Delta Pi national convention. The award is the highest honor an Alpha Delta Pi chapter can receive and chapters must meet requirements consecutively for a minimum of six years in order to be eligible to win the award. Criteria cover all aspects of chapter performance, including operations and administration, philanthropy, programming, recruitment and campus involvement. Only 10 percent of Alpha Delta Pi chapters were awarded the Maxine Blake Golden Lion Award.
