Mercer to Offer Two Ph.D. Programs in Savannah This Year

SAVANNAH — Mercer University’s Tift College of Education will offer two Ph.D. programs in Savannah beginning later this year. The Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction will be offered for the first time in Savannah beginning in May and the Ph.D. in Educational Leadership will begin in August on the Mercer campus in Savannah. Both degrees will be offered in hybrid format, with both in-class and online components.

The University will hold the first series of three drop-in graduate information sessions for prospective students today, Feb. 22 and March 20, all from 4:30-6:30 p.m. in the Mercer Auditorium located in the Hoskins Building at Memorial Health University Medical Center, 4700 Waters Ave. in Savannah. The Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction requires a minimum of nine consecutive semesters to complete the program. The courses are offered in a hybrid online and on-campus model, with classes in the evenings and four Saturdays per 16-week semester in the fall and spring. Students are required to take an average of two courses with a two-hour doctoral seminar each semester. Admission requirements for the program include a bachelor’s and master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university, three years of successful teaching experience, a recent GRE score, letters of reference, an interview and writing sample.

The Ph.D. in Educational Leadership is offered through two tracks: the higher education track and the performance-based P-12 school leadership track, which is one of only a select few in the state approved by the Professional Standards Commission and one of only two such performance-based doctoral programs offered in Savannah. For both tracks, a minimum of three complete years, or nine semesters, will be required to complete the program. Classes will be in the evenings over 8-week semesters and a required internship. Students will take two to three courses each semester and three courses in the summer.

Admission requirements for the higher education leadership track include a bachelor’s and master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university as well as teaching or leadership experience in higher education, a recent GRE score, letters of reference, an interview and writing sample. Admission requirements for the P-12 School Leadership Track include a bachelor’s and master’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university, current leadership certification from the Professional Standards Commission of Georgia, three years of successful teaching experience, a recent GRE score, letters of reference, an interview, writing sample and approval from the employing school district to pursue a performance-based program.
