February at Fickling Hall: Townsend School of Music Packs Month with Major Guest Artists

MACON — Ensemble Chaconne, Robert McDuffie, Yaniv Segal, Anton Nel, and “Slammin” Sammy K are all headliners in concert venues around the world. Each of them takes the stage at Fickling Hall this month to perform and share their expertise.

The 10th Anniversary celebration of the McCorkle Music Building continues with Ensemble Chaconne in concert. The trio specializes in music from Baroque and Renaissance Europe performed on instruments from the same period, including flutes, viola da gamba, lute, orbo and early guitar. The trio brings a program of “Ancient Masterpieces” to Fickling on Feb. 7 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 general admission, free with Mercer I.D.

The Fabian Concert Series welcomes Center for Strings namesake Robert McDuffie back to Fickling Hall for a concert on Feb. 11 at 7:30 p.m. This native son of Macon delivers dynamic, world-class performances to packed audiences all around the world. Don’t delay in purchasing tickets to see him perform. Tickets are $25 general admission, free with Mercer I.D. This concert is expected to sell out, so be advised to reserve tickets soon.

A memorable Valentine’s Day is guaranteed when the Mercer University Orchestra performs under the direction of rising star, conductor Yaniv Segal, on Feb. 14 in Fickling Hall at 7:30 p.m. The young founder and conductor of New York’s Chelsea Symphony also serves as music director of the Michigan Pops Orchestra. The concert is free and open to the public.

Acclaimed pianist Anton Nel performs on the Steinway in Fickling Hall on Feb. 21 at 7:30 p.m., another concert in celebration of the 10th Anniversary of the McCorkle Music Building. The master pianist shares his experience in a Master Class for Townsend student musicians. Be part of the audience at this free event that is open to the public, on Feb. 22 at 10 a.m. Tickets are $10 general admission, free with Mercer I.D.

Jazz percussionist “Slammin” Sammy K rounds out the full February lineup with three events. Masterworks at Noon series presents Twelve O’Clock Jazz with Sammy and guest artists Boudleaux Allen, jazz guitar, and Monty Cole, clarinet, on Feb. 24 at noon. That night, the Mercer Jazz Ensemble joins Sammy K for a 7:30 p.m. concert in Fickling. Finally, on Feb. 25, the L.A.-based jazz musician conducts a Saturday Jazz Clinic for high school jazz musicians, beginning at 10 a.m. All three events are free and open to the public, though advance registration for the Jazz Clinic is required.
