Mercer’s Double Graduate Judge M. Yvette Miller Headlines Founders’ Day

421

MACON — Mercer University will celebrate 2012 Founders’ Day with a campuswide event featuring an address by double Mercer graduate, the Honorable M. Yvette Miller, judge on the Georgia Court of Appeals and a Mercer trustee. The event, sponsored by Mercer’s Student Government Association, will be held Wednesday in Willingham Auditorium at 10 a.m.

Founders’ Day is an annual celebration that honors Mercer’s early pioneers and offers an opportunity for reflection upon Mercer’s rich traditions and history. Judge Miller is a pioneer in her own right, as the first African-American woman on the court. She has been re-elected statewide without opposition by the citizens of Georgia for two six-year terms, most recently in November 2006. In October 2008, Judge Miller was unanimously selected by her fellow judges to serve as Chief Judge for a two-year term, which began Jan. 1, 2009, and ended on Jan. 1, 2011. Judge Miller is the first African-American woman to serve as Chief Judge of the Court of Appeals of Georgia. Following her tenure as chief judge, she was presiding judge for 2011 before returning to her role as a judge on the court.

She received her Bachelor of Arts, cum laude, from Mercer in 1977 and her Juris Doctorate from Mercer’s Walter F. George School of Law in 1980. Judge Miller also earned a Master of Laws in litigation from Emory University School of Law in 1988 and a Master of Laws in the judicial process from the University of Virginia School of Law in 2004.
